Sarawak is solidifying its position as a frontrunner in Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS), underlining its ambition to build a low-carbon economy and establish itself as a green energy hub in the Asia-Pacific.

Speaking at the Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR) Summit in Kuching, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg described CCUS as central to the state’s strategy for decarbonising industries and contributing to global net-zero goals.

“Sarawak plans to develop four carbon storage sites by 2030, leveraging its natural resources and fostering innovative partnerships,” said Abang Johari during his keynote address at the Sheraton Hotel.

The Premier highlighted a series of significant milestones achieved in 2023, including a landmark storage site agreement with Petronas and Japanese consortiums for the M3 depleted field offshore. In July, the Sarawak Bid Round offered three additional storage sites with a combined capacity of 1 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2), attracting global interest and investment.

These initiatives, he noted, align with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which envisions CCUS as a driver of RM250 billion in economic value over the next three decades.

Green Energy Ambitions

Sarawak is also intensifying efforts to boost renewable energy capacity, aiming to generate 15 gigawatts of hydropower by 2035. This would position the state as a key regional green energy exporter, with plans to supply electricity to neighboring countries such as Singapore and Indonesia.

The Kuching Low-Carbon Hub, launched at the summit, is expected to accelerate Sarawak’s transition to a low-carbon future. The hub will integrate gas-fired power facilities, low-carbon industrial clusters, and advanced CCS infrastructure, with projected investments of up to RM200 billion.

A Balanced Approach

Abang Johari stressed that Sarawak’s dual focus on economic growth and environmental sustainability exemplifies its commitment to balanced development. “Our leadership in CCUS and renewable energy not only enhances Sarawak’s economic prospects but also strengthens its role as a sustainable energy pioneer in Malaysia and the wider region,” he said.

The Premier’s vision cements Sarawak’s standing as a leader in green energy innovation, showcasing its ability to leverage cutting-edge technologies to meet both local and global climate challenges.
