Malaysia will commence its first cross-border trade of renewable energy to Singapore this month, marking a significant milestone in regional energy collaboration. The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry confirmed the initiative will supply 50 megawatts (MW) of green electricity as part of its broader push toward sustainability.
The project, resulting from a competitive bidding process managed by Energy Exchange Malaysia (Enegem) in June, represents a step forward in integrating renewable energy across borders.
“Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the national utility provider, will deliver the electricity to Singapore through Sembcorp Power Pte Ltd, utilizing the existing interconnection network between the two countries,” the ministry said in a statement.
Strategic Renewable Energy Trade
The bidding process conducted via Enegem is part of the Cross Border Electricity Sales for Renewable Energy Scheme. The phased initiative targets a total capacity of up to 300MW to be delivered through the same interconnection framework.
Enegem’s role is central to the effort, facilitating the procurement and delivery of green electricity from Malaysia’s power grid to Singapore using a transparent, competitive bidding mechanism. The initiative reflects Malaysia’s energy transition goals and underscores its commitment to fostering regional electricity supply integration under the ASEAN Power Grid framework.
Regional Collaboration in Focus
The ministry emphasized the strategic importance of the program, particularly as Malaysia prepares to assume the ASEAN chairmanship in 2025. The cross-border energy trade aligns with Malaysia’s aspirations for a greener energy future and its support for greater regional collaboration.
In a symbolic move underscoring the partnership, a signing ceremony for the renewable energy supply agreement between TNB and Sembcorp Power took place at the ministry, attended by officials from both nations.
This development not only advances Malaysia’s energy ambitions but also strengthens ties with Singapore, setting the stage for deeper regional cooperation in sustainable energy initiatives.
