LF Energy, the Linux Foundation initiative championing open source solutions for the energy sector, has announced the launch of three groundbreaking projects designed to drive global decarbonization efforts. Alongside these new ventures, LF Energy has expanded its flagship OpenEEMeter initiative into a comprehensive suite for energy modeling and has announced partnerships with the International Energy Agency (IEA) and non-profit Open Energy Transition.

Pioneering Projects Target Energy Grid Innovation and Emissions Visibility

LF Energy’s Technical Advisory Council has welcomed three projects into its fold, providing them with a neutral platform to encourage collaboration, reduce costs, and streamline innovation. With open governance as a cornerstone, these initiatives ensure that no single entity dominates decision-making, promoting joint investment and progress.

  • GEISA (Grid Edge Interoperability & Security Alliance): Spearheaded by Southern California Edison (SCE), GEISA aims to create a secure, interoperable ecosystem for edge applications. By standardizing runtime environments and auditing processes, it paves the way for innovative grid-edge solutions.
  • GridFM: This initiative, contributed by Hydro-Quebec and IBM, focuses on creating open source AI models tailored to power grids. These foundational models leverage vast data sets to address challenges in grid optimization and resilience.
  • SC Decarbonisation Hub (SCDH): Originating from Shell, this platform provides organizations with tools to measure and address Scope 3 emissions. By offering transparency and actionable insights, SCDH is poised to play a critical role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

OpenEEMeter Evolves into OpenDSM

The OpenEEMeter project, which provides open source methods for energy consumption modeling, has been rebranded as OpenDSM to reflect its expanded capabilities. The suite now includes:

  • EEweather: Integrates critical weather data for energy modeling.
  • EEmeter: Develops long-term energy consumption models to evaluate efficiency programs.
  • DRmeter: Creates short-term models to assess demand response initiatives.
  • GRIDmeter: Refines measurements using data from non-participants to account for external influences.

LF Energy Summit Returns in 2025

The LF Energy Summit will convene on September 10-11, 2025, in Aachen, Germany, building on the success of its 2024 edition in Brussels. The annual gathering brings together stakeholders from utilities, technology companies, and research institutions to foster collaboration and share best practices. Partnerships Strengthen Global Energy Goals

  • Open Energy Transition Joins LF Energy: The non-profit’s membership underscores a shared commitment to advancing renewable energy technologies through collaborative solutions.
  • EVerest and IEA’s Task 53: In a joint effort to enhance the interoperability of bidirectional EV charging systems, LF Energy’s EVerest project has partnered with the IEA’s Task 53. Together, they aim to standardize and expand the adoption of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technologies.

TROLIE Publishes Key Specification for Transmission Operators

The TROLIE initiative, developed to meet the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s Order 881, has released its 1.0.0 specification. This open source framework facilitates the exchange of transmission ratings data, promoting operational reliability and efficiency.
