Sarawak has taken a significant step forward in its energy transition ambitions, partnering with Italy to develop a 500-megawatt (MW) power plant fueled by renewable biomass resources. The collaboration was formalized on Monday through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Sarawak-based ACACIA Power Sdn Bhd and NextChem SpA, a sustainable technology solutions provider owned by Italy’s Maire Group.
ACACIA Power, a subsidiary of Permodalan Satok Bhd established in 2024, will lead the project, which aims to leverage Sarawak’s vast natural resources, including acacia wood pellets and other biomass feedstocks sourced locally. The plant is envisioned as a cornerstone of Sarawak’s efforts to position itself as a sustainable energy leader.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg highlighted the project’s alignment with the state’s long-term environmental and economic goals.
“This collaboration exemplifies how Sarawak’s abundant natural resources can be harnessed and transformed into sustainable energy solutions,” said Abang Johari. “With the Maire Group’s cutting-edge technologies and experience, complemented by Sarawak’s expertise in cultivating acacia, we are well-placed to tackle the challenges of global climate change.”
The initiative forms part of Sarawak’s broader strategy to cut carbon emissions by 2030 and accelerate its post-pandemic economic recovery. According to the Premier, the partnership demonstrates the state’s commitment to decarbonisation and a shift towards renewable energy infrastructure.
Italian Support for Decarbonisation Efforts
The Italian Ambassador to Malaysia, Massimo Rustico, expressed strong support for Sarawak’s energy ambitions, emphasizing Italy’s readiness to provide financial backing through its Export Credit Agency, under the auspices of the Ministry of Finance and Economy.
“Our delegates will engage with Sarawak’s finance secretariat to explore avenues of financial support for these critical initiatives,” Rustico said. “Decarbonisation is a shared priority for Italy and governments worldwide, and we are committed to assisting Sarawak in achieving its sustainability goals.”
Abang Johari praised the involvement of artificial intelligence and innovative technologies in the project, stating that they would enhance productivity and ensure the plant’s viability as a model for large-scale renewable energy development.
A Regional Leader in Renewable Energy
Sarawak has long sought to leverage its natural advantages to become a leader in sustainable energy. With this new venture, the state aims to strengthen its role in the global fight against climate change while fostering economic growth and technological innovation. The plant’s development is expected to create local jobs, stimulate the biomass industry, and contribute to Sarawak’s ambition of becoming a net-zero emissions economy.
As global demand for renewable energy surges, the Sarawak-Italy partnership underscores the critical role of international collaboration in addressing the climate crisis and advancing sustainable development.
