Latest release of open source CSMS enhances EV charger interoperability, introduces streamlined UI and technical upgrades

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – April 7, 2025 – LF Energy, the open source foundation accelerating the transition to a decarbonized energy system, today announced the release of CitrineOS 1.6.0, marking a major step forward in electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure with full support for OCPP 1.6, the most widely adopted protocol for EV charger communications.

Originally developed by S44 Energy and now hosted by LF Energy, CitrineOS is an open source Charging Station Management System (CSMS) built for flexibility, modularity, and interoperability. By extending compatibility beyond OCPP 2.0.1 to now include OCPP 1.6, CitrineOS enables a broader range of chargers to operate within a unified, vendor-neutral platform—making it easier for network operators to manage diverse hardware and scale faster.

“CitrineOS’s expansion to support OCPP 1.6 is a significant step in our commitment to providing an open and interoperable EV charging software stack,” said Alex Thornton, Executive Director of LF Energy. “By enabling a broader range of chargers to leverage open source CSMS, we’re accelerating the growth of flexible, resilient EV charging networks.”

Key Features in CitrineOS 1.6.0:

  • OCPP 1.6 Support: Seamless handling of both OCPP 1.6 and 2.0.1 protocols for broader device interoperability.
  • New Dynamic UI: A purpose-built, operator-focused interface for streamlined management of:
    • Charging Stations
    • Transactions
    • Locations
    • Authorizations
  • Technical Upgrades:
    • GraphQL integration for advanced data querying
    • Refactored architecture to better support multi-protocol operations
    • Enhanced file storage with support for S3-compatible MinIO
    • Removal of Directus CMS dependency, improving speed and simplifying maintenance

S44 Energy, the original creator of CitrineOS, continues to contribute to its ongoing development.

“Our goal has always been to build software that meets real-world EV infrastructure needs,” said Olga Haygood, CEO of S44 Energy. “This update ensures more charging networks—regardless of hardware—can benefit from a flexible, scalable, open source CSMS.”
