Investment in climate technologies is rapidly increasing, signaling a significant shift towards decarbonizing the global energy system.
Last year, investment in the energy transition matched global investment in fossil fuels, reaching $1.1 trillion, according to BloombergNEF.
This marked a milestone as the first year when investment in decarbonizing energy surpassed the $1 trillion mark, with a substantial year-on-year increase of over $250 billion.
A Multi-Trillion Market (With a T)
Renewable energy and electrified transport are the main beneficiaries of this growing investment.
Installations of over 350 gigawatts of wind and solar assets and the sale of more than 10 million electric vehicles globally contributed to the financial inflow.
Electrified transport, including passenger EVs, public charging infrastructure, electric 2- and 3-wheelers, electric buses, and commercial electric vehicles, accounted for significant capital flow within the sector.
Although carbon capture and hydrogen represent smaller sectors for investment, they experienced substantial growth.
Carbon capture investment nearly tripled to $6.3 billion, while hydrogen investment more than tripled, surpassing $1 billion.
However, to have a significant climate impact, the use of these technologies must be scaled up considerably.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), in order to align with the 1.5°C pathway and effectively combat climate change, annual investments need to exceed $5 trillion, more than quadrupling the current levels.
By 2030, cumulative investments of $44 trillion are required, with $35 trillion allocated to transition technologies such as efficiency, electrification, grid expansion, and flexibility.
