QatarEnergy has announced plans to build a 2 GW solar power plant in Dukhan, located in western Qatar, a move set to more than double the nation’s total installed solar capacity.
The project, unveiled by Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of Energy and the President and CEO of QatarEnergy, marks a significant step in the country’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and diversify its energy mix. “Developing solar power plants is one of Qatar’s most crucial initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions, develop sustainability projects, and diversify electricity production,” said Al-Kaabi during a press conference. He added that the new plant would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 4.7 million tons annually.
The new Dukhan facility is expected to significantly enhance Qatar’s solar power capabilities, which currently stand at 808 MW, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). This follows QatarEnergy’s recent developments in renewable energy, including the 800 MW Al-Kharsaah solar power plant that began operations in 2022 and an 875 MW project spanning Ras Laffan and Mesaieed, due to commence production by the end of the year.
Upon completion, the Dukhan project will bring QatarEnergy’s total solar capacity to approximately 4 GW by 2030, representing around 30% of the country’s electricity generation capacity.
