Sarawak and Australia have strengthened their collaboration to accelerate the deployment of energy storage systems in support of Sarawak’s renewable energy ambitions.

During a courtesy visit to the Premier of Sarawak on March 3, officials from the Australian High Commission in Malaysia and Sarawak Energy Berhad outlined a joint strategy to explore and implement energy storage technologies. The partnership aims to integrate these systems into Sarawak’s existing energy infrastructure while shaping the policy framework needed for a smooth energy transition.

This initiative is backed by Partnerships for Infrastructure—Australia’s flagship program in Southeast Asia that channels Australian expertise to support sustainable infrastructure development, economic growth, and regional connectivity.

The agreement was formalised through an exchange of letters between Australia’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, Her Excellency Danielle Heinecke, and Sarawak Energy Group CEO Datuk Sharbini Suhaili.

Under this collaboration, the focus will be on:

  • Evaluating energy storage technologies suitable for Sarawak’s distinct energy landscape,
  • Enhancing Sarawak Energy’s modelling capabilities to assess storage benefits and system optimization,
  • Supporting targeted investments in renewable energy and storage infrastructure.

More than a technical cooperation, the initiative underscores a long-standing and evolving partnership between Australia and Malaysia—one that celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. Anchored in shared values and mutual trust, the relationship continues to expand across sectors.

Malaysia remains a key economic partner for Australia, with two-way trade valued at A$33 billion in 2023–2024. This new chapter in energy collaboration further reflects both nations’ commitment to sustainable development and regional leadership in clean energy innovation.
